Reversing Land Degradation at Rupangwana Irrigation Scheme.
Rupangwana Irrigation Scheme lies in the South Eastern “Lowveld” of Zimbabwe (Chiredzi). Soil erosion is rampart in the area and gullies have developed in waterway passing through the scheme. The gullies, in total have an estimated length of 60m with an average depth of 0.8m to 1.5m. The gullies were threatening arable land within and outside the irrigation scheme.
To address this the Department of Mechanisation together with farmers from the scheme have embarked on gulley reclamation exercise. The activities carried out included
- construction of 2 silt traps in the gully to allow sedimentation using stones
- planting banana plants along the water way to control surface runoff and bond the soil
