In 2019, Cyclone Idai hit Zimbabwe and SIRP operational areas were not spared. In response to the devastating impact of cyclone Idai, the programme established 9 community nutrition gardens. To date, 4 nutrition gardens are functional, 2 in Midlands Kwekwe exchange (Kuwirirana and Kurima ishungu garden), Chisandako garden in Masvingo and Tsoaranang garden in Matebeleland South. The gardens are solar powered and have tapes for drinking water, a trough for livestock.
“I am so happy with the garden that we received from SIRP. It has brought a new release of life for me and my family. From the three beds allocated to me, I have enough vegetables to feed my family” The installation of a solar powered pump has really lightened the burden of getting water for household use. I no longer dread going to the borehole to get water” said Mai Angela a mother of five.
